New Design ^_^
Its been a busy few weeks over xmas, tbh I'm glad its gone by so fast so I can get back on with my artwork and plans for my shop!
Though I am pleased that this Christmas has brought me a new pair of DM's. My feet will no longer be wet. Also it was good to see my folks n' eat well...
I've been spending the last week drawing up a new design for my clothing range. Tho...currently I cant afford a 'range' so I'm starting off with hoodies...everyones basic staple! Later, hopefully, I hope to branch out into Tee's,'wifebeaters' and panties. (I got a dirty idea for those ^_~)
Here is a sneeky peek of the design for the hoodies...

Still gotta add in some wasps and light rays but its really coming along ^_^
Also spent the entire evening yesterday making up my goody bags - When my store goes live you will be able to get these for free when you buy a print in my store or £2.50 each.

I have over 100 of them waiting in a box in the corner of the room lol. Took me 3 hours to get them all just right! x2 stickers, 1 badge and x2 mints.
Glad I've got that part done now though because now I can focus on knocking out some designs, and getting my past artwork printed up in more limited batches.
Lookin forward to what the coming weeks have to hold!
Plus....the mess of course ^_~

Tote Bags...
Okay! So here we go a proper update ^_^
Yesterday was a long but productive day - started by walking / taking a bus across the city to print off some accetates, came back into the city and started work on my first ever tote bags...
Stated off pressing them flat for a perfect crisp base to print onto...

Exposed the screen...

And got to work! ....

'Take Flight' is the design I chose....
Works really well on the fabric ^_^

Also printed up some OPAL 'O' tote bags to give away for free with my large prints...

Last week I ordered some bulk stickers - they came through this morning :D

These and the badges will be available to purchase from my online store (yet to be launched) and included in my free goody bag for those who purchase large prints!
I finally purchased the colours for my 'GUN!' piece this afternoon - Sour Apple (lime green) Bubble Gum (Baby Pink) Grape (Purple) and Bananna! On track to printing those babies up in early Jan hopefully for the shop reveal in early Feb.
T - Shirts and Wife beaters next...
Bring it on!

Why So Slow!?
Well....
I've been working every hour I can get to save up enough money for screenprinting inks, hire time at the printing studio and clothing to print onto! So I havent been sitting on my arse doing nothing! ^_~ Apart from editing of course....many MANY cups of tea went down.
Its been a hectic month but I now have enough money to start printing up some more stock ^_^
Tuesday evening I'll be printing the first batch of black tote bags for the store (of which has been upgraded to a BIG CARTEL instead of an ETSY store!) Cleaner - crisper and I get my own checkout button (woo!)
Next month I hope to start taking images of the limited prints I have in stock, and the tote bags for the store, I'm really looking forward to getting those up in the shop, I hope the location I've decided on works for the images :S gotta sort me out some props...
Sam at SHhhh! Art Collective, posted a teaser of my work on his Blog:
http://shhhhblog.tumblr.com/
...generally getting ready for the big reveal! - Got some more prints to get on and do, and some Tees and I'll be ready! I'm scared and excited to see the outcome but hopefully it will really get this ball rolling! Really looking forward to being involved in the 11 artists project and becoming involved with the artistic familly (=^_^=)
Reveal is getting closer!

Meh...
I got a couple of projects I'm working on atm, a bunch of idea's that incorporate tentacles and body parts, sea creatures and eels.
Trying to do some more rank / disgusting / weird pieces...
Also had my first tattoo request...its coming along nicely though fitting her orginal tattoo into the design is proving difficult. Nearly there though... Humming birds, lillies and honeysuckles with ribbon...
As much as I try to get away from drawing them, hands are currently in all the ideas I want to do....
.... I cant draw hands.

My entry didn't get picked...
So here you go!
'GUN!'

Above is the original colour (glow in the dark) which was sent....
2 months of knuckling down to be told "its not quite right for the show" :'( I can understand though...maybe a bit to naughty or something! :S Gonna keep trying to get into a London show though .... or anywhere really! I need a break yu know? Keepin' my chin up though so don't worry.
I've been experimenting with photoshop this evening and oddly enough the colours I thought would work really well looked like shit! So....I sat and thought / played with colours for a while and finally came to the conclusion that it would be awesome to have colours named after favours of sweets....

Sour Apple, Grape, Bubblegum and Banana! (With one unique colour print to be announced!)
So yeah.....blue, red and yellow didn't feel right as a set :S which at first was a little bit worrying as my heart was firmly set on those colours...so glad they didnt work though! Because I'm SO friggin' happy with the set above - my pulse is going crazy thinking about getting them printed!
These prints will be available from my etsy shop....The openning was going to be this month however due to my limited funds I can only hire out the print studio once a month so it looks like I'll be unveiling my shop in Spring next year :( Don't worry! I will keep you guys posted so you can check it out :D

'Big Brother Is Watching You'
Big Brother Is Watching You
Autumn 2010

I guess you can call my most recent piece 'white work' rather than 'black work' I wanted to try using areas of white more dominantly...I think I prefer the heavier use of black with white as negative space though. There is something I like in the blocky bold areas of black which white areas dont seem to achieve. Also the white areas dont seem as imposing as I would like.
Not to say I dont like the 'white work' its just I feel more connected as an artist to the darker pieces. They seem more fitting to my style.
...........
The next couple of pieces I plan to work on are currently revolving around themes of leaving somewhere, moving forward with life, taking flight and following your dreams / your heart. In this series I aim to illustrate what I feel in my life at the time....
So I'm experimenting with the meaning of gestures with hands and iconography. Simplifying thoughts and feelings into minimal visual components. I try to get what I want to say to the veiwer by using one or two visual aids, for example: Lost Transmission only uses 5 visual aids to get the meaning across. Hands (x2) to represent individuals, untied ribbon (x2) to represent a broken link and a circle (1) to represent the earth and distance....
I feel if there are too many visual aids the meaning of the piece becomes very lost so therefore by sticking to no more than 5 or 6 this makes the piece much stronger.
I've been trying to use this method of thinking in all of the work I have created so far and it seems to be working well for me.
I'm not too far off finishing another piece so watch this space....

1st ever exhibit...
The guys at Factotum Body Modification Studio (Norwich) were nice enough to hang my work in their waiting area along side other artists in the Norwich area this week ^_^

Decided on silver frames so as not to take away from the overall image, black frames seemed to me, like too much of a harsh border. The silver almost seems to melt away in the background which I think compliments it well!
I may even use nothing but silver frames from now on...

If you're in the area give them a visit!

Print Day!
Today I hired out Stew Print Rooms (http://www.stew.org.uk/) for the afternoon to get 'What Is She Building In There?' printed out and ready to be put into my Etsy store!
Two more months to go before the shop goes live! So far I have:
30 prints of 'Pull Through'
&
15 prints of 'What Is She Building In There?'
Okay that wasn't really a list but its growing! I plan to have 5 different prints to choose from when it goes live in November, though I would love to have more if my bank balance would allow me the hire time! I'll have to see how it goes...
So as I was saying....I've spent this lovely sunny Thursday inside getting covered in ink up to my elbows, my feet hurt and my arms ache but its definately been worth it!
Started the day by exposing and spraying my screen...

(Click through for larger images!)
Getting it mounted up ready for ink....

Testing the screen is alright.....note....I ended up covering most of the floor with test runs 5 mins after this photo was taken :S ...not obsessive compulsive! NO!

...maybe.
The ink ready to be screened on the posh nice heavy paper! mmmmm glossy!

Testing the mechanical arm ^_^ Definitely made doing the A1 prints a lot easier and gave smooth coverage.

The birthing process mid flow!....

So happy with this batch, though I might need to keep them in the spare room over my Dad's as I have no space to put them in my bedsit!
Tonight however, it looks like they'll be taking the bed and I'll be taking the floor. ^_~

A1 Screen Print.....
Tomorrow is the big day! That is...I'm doing my first ever A1 screen print! The artwork chosen for this is 'What Is She Building In There?' the first piece I ever did in blackwork...
I unrolled the acetate today to correct any print roller markings:

...there was rather more than I thought!

Big fella on the bed! Not entirely sure how I'm going to get these prints home but I'll find a way!
There will be a limited run of 20 hand pulled prints of this design! Signed and numbered of course ^_^ Tomorrow I get to experiment with the screen printing 'arm' because this is such a big project, I hope everything goes to plan! Pictures to follow n_n
Oh and I just found this image on my camera:

This is how all my artwork starts! Generally with crappy tracing paper rubbed outline....the only way I can get something symmetrical!

This week....
...has consisted of me staring at my laptop screen for approximately 12 hours editing my competition piece! ....and I mean so close that you can see each individual pixel, it looks absolutely smashing now though, sharp as a razor! ^_^ I've even began adding the glowey components to the design too - the coming week will see the adding of glow in the dark smoke and other such pretties! Cant wait to do these parts ^_^
I found a new place to have my work scanned in on the outskirts of the city and they did an excellent job! Unlike the previous places which scanned the artwork in as a document I didn't understand when I asked for a Jpeg / forgot to put the scan on my penstick / put marks on the orginal artwork....Hussy & Knights are the way forward....though I did get a slightly odd face from the woman behind the counter when I handed in what I wanted to scan....lol.
Also having an A1 rolled up acetate sticking out of my backpack nearly a metre into the air on the motorbike distracted a scarily high amount of road-users, yes...I have something sticking out of my bag....please stop staring and watch the road! K Thx Zoom!
30th of September is the deadline! So its getting close now, think I'm on track though :)

"Faces of Pharaohs"
This week I've spent alot of time reading a book titled "Faces of Pharaohs"

Found it in our local Oxfam book shop (which has many rare & interesting reads) for £7....Quite alot for a second hand book but its so totally awesome and for charity so I didnt mind so much!
I very rarely become completely absorbed in a book but I read this one (almost all the way though) in a day. I'm hooked! Theres something almost otherworldly about the Egyptians and the way they lived. The way they treat the body after death absolutely fascinates me.
If I lived back then I would probably be an embalmer! The wrapping process, the iconography, the ritual....theres nothing quite like it today.

I've been thinking about doing a piece of blackwork with the coffins;

The amount of work which goes into each one is astounding - inlays jewels colored glass resins, all hand carved with meticulous hands. I'd love to re-create this somehow with just a black pen, I think doing a facial piece would be cool because I can experiment with shine on the stones and trying to make them glisten...Difficult I know but if i get it right the shine will really bring the piece to life...
Before I start sketching though, I will have to look into iconography and hieroglyphs - I may add some blackwork wording in there...I want the piece to be really meaningful not just a pretty picture...

Love the eyes especially! Lookin' forward to stylizing those!

....and lastly a little sneeky peek at the piece I've been working on recently ^_~

Carboot...
Went to a carboot a few days ago and picked up some gems n_n!

£3
Needed a new tripod for ages ever since an ex of mine decided to take it without me knowing pah!

£2!
Polaroid camera - now I don't have to keep asking to borrow my sisters one all the time! She will be pleased n_n
Only thing is the dial only shows up to 10 polaroids....generally the new polaroid film is 20 shots ( I think?! ) Hopefully it will take the new film...Anyone with info on this please let me know ^_^

20p
My personal favorite find! Perfect lightweight black square wooden box. NOM! Was thinking of some sort of collage / taxidermy butterfly / blackwork piece for this! n_n

Was told about this site a few months ago....

Inspirational...
I found this video on my Sister's Blog months ago:
...and haven't been able to forget about it since.
There's something that grasps me about this...the unpredictability of the sounds, the birds, the natural flow it has...I'm sure if I was to see this installation in the flesh I would sit there for hours listening and absorbing the piece.
Excellent.

Business Cards Arrived!
Over the last week or so I've been designing some business cards on moo.com....they came through this morning n_n

As well as giving them out to people who ask about my artwork, I was thinking it would be nice to send one of these out with every print purchased in a small thin plastic film slip with two black and white striped mints inside...I think it would make a nice personal touch ^_^
............
Competition piece is continuing to move forward at a steady pace...although it keeps getting more and more elaborate :S today I'm designing exhausts with the help of Tasc1!
Stay tuned...

Submission for Print Club London...
Last night I started my submission for the competition Print Club London are running. I'm not going to tell you anything about what the final design will be, but I will tell you small bit about it...
Started the piece off by drawing an engine...something I've never thought about doing before...it was difficult but after a few attempts I managed to get what I wanted and began to ink over the lines.
I also began to draw liquid tanks with metal straps around them to the side of it which look great! The design is really starting to come together and I cant wait to play around with the designs for the exhausts later this week.
Don't worry though... I havent turned into a complete bloke! The finished piece will be something completely obscure and (hopefully) original. I think I will surprise a few people with this piece when it is completed!

"What Is She Building In There?"
This is actually the first piece of black work I created. Approximately a meter high ( something I've come to regret as I didn't think about the size when scanning; an annoying obstacle.)
"What Is She Building In There" took over 3 weeks to sketch and pen. Using 6 sharpie markers in the process...
The piece is about people constantly asking me what I'm doing artistically and that when they view the piece they still wont be able to fully comprehend what it is about. The only person who can completely understand is myself.
I am immersed in my own artistic bubble.
Below is the finished edited piece...

This is the scan I had to work from...

Scanners suck!

Art Competition London...

http://www.printclublondon.com/postershow3.php
Cant wait to get my idea out of my head and onto paper for this competition! I love that they have to have a glow in the dark element! :D I know exactly what I want to do but its proving difficult to draw it how I imagine it...
Hopefully I wont get another annoying art block before the deadline...
1st batch of screenprints...
I finally got around to printing a limited edition of 30 prints of "Pull Through" Below are some pictures of the detail...

I'm really happy with how crisp they all came out! I loved signing and numbering each one, they're currently nesting in the corner of my room waiting for a handful more designs to be added to the collection - when I get enough together I can finally launch my etsy store...
Watch this space....
